People have come together throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the plan.

A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.

The source explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A lasting truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • After-conflict management of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until every captive return none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist a participant stated: "We need do any agreement needed for the captives to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to end in return for the release of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli shelling continued.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the night comes, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.

"We are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are lying together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated two more fatalities had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south, health workers said.
