New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was āpositiveā during their recent conversation.
āThat gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,ā Glenn said Wednesday. āHis wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.ā
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
āStill unsure,ā he added. āYet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, thatās what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and heās talking that way.ā
NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking āa tonā since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
āWhat immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,ā Glenn remarked. āI thought of his spouse, Iām thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that heās OK. That was my main concern.
āThere is a procedure involved, that I wonāt detail, but Iām happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.ā
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the teamās updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
āHe remains involved with our activities,ā Glenn stated. āI mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.ā
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He joined Arizona in last year and then joined Houstonās practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
