A pair of undefeated runs continued intact at Anfield, but only one side could take genuine contentment from the result. Leeds United carried out a textbook game plan of stifling and containing the hosts, with the first goalless draw of Arne Slot's tenure highlighting the lingering limitations within the current champions' recent upturn.
A drab scoreless draw, the initial in 84 matches for Liverpool, was largely due to the defensive dominance of the excellent defensive duo Struijk and Bijol, coupled with the home side's inability to unlock a well-drilled visitors' defence. The Merseysiders were limited to speculative half-chances, and a smattering of discontent echoed around the stadium at the final whistle on a sluggish display.
"Should I do not utilise the entire squad and we have a schedule like this, I would never do this," the manager explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to protect him. We all know his recent couple of years was challenging. He is in red-hot form but it's important I look after him and sometimes the mind needs to win over the emotion."
Arne Slot's team at first displayed more energy and sharpness than in recent outings, with Jeremie Frimpong prominent on the flank. Nevertheless, golden chances were scarce. Their primary openings in the opening half fell to striker Hugo Ekitiké.
Ekitiké's evening was compounded when he did not manage to hit the target with his best opening. Meeting a swift Frimpong cross in the goal area, the attacker miscued a header that hit the Perri while with an open goal.
At the other end, their clearest sight of goal arrived from an Liverpool goalkeeper mistake. The experienced shot-stopper sent a wayward clearance directly to disruptor Ethan Ampadu, whose instant shot returned towards goal was gathered by the alert Alisson.
The contest descended into a scrappy affair, devoid on quality. The midfielder, back from a ban, tested Perri from range. The subsequent rebound resulted in Ampadu controlling the ball, giving Liverpool a set-piece in a dangerous area, which Wirtz wasted into the wall.
Slot made a three substitution to inject impetus, and soon after Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to heading his side in front from a corner, his header flying just past the post.
Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had continued his goal run for the visitors in the closing stages, but his finish was ruled out for a marginal offside call. In the end, both sides had to settle for a share of the points.
