New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.
"The choice was based on the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live inside me and my work," he added.
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he hails from a famous family.
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
