NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Public to Report ICE Footage After Arrests of 4 American Citizens

The state AG has rolled out a new digital platform encouraging locals to submit visual evidence of ICE operations throughout the state. This move comes just a day after a high-profile enforcement action shook Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale demonstrations.

US Citizens Detained In Raid

A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and held for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen deserves to reside free from terror," state officials stated in a release.

"If you witnessed and captured ICE activity recently, I urge you to provide that material with my office. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and investigating any legal breaches."

Portal Features

The platform offers spaces to submit photos and videos of the operation, plus a section to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, individuals must check a box that states that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or official statement."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say featured more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a famous district of the city where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are regularly available widely – often to visitors.

Recordings of the incident depict numerous masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a man, and forcing aside bystanders. Masses of New Yorkers followed the agents down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was observed moving along the urban roads.

Political Response

In a Wednesday press conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for without cause." He said the citizens were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman stated. "This is a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the troops to prevent violence that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the federal action escalated – all three NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the raid, including NY's governor.

"Yet again, the federal government chooses oppressive displays that instill panic, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.

New York City advocacy organizations spoke out too.

"ICE targeted the neighborhood with armored transports, covered personnel and protective equipment to focus on street vendors trying to make a living. This operation had nothing to do with citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," stated the leader of a rights organization.

Agency Rules

Agency rules bans the detention of US citizens and the agency has claimed it will not apprehend US citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities during the period of the present government.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and around the country recently.

A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the present government. Rallies against ICE are ubiquitous as are accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.

Most recently, a document filed by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of pregnant women in detention centers.
