Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He battled the legal system and the legal system won.

Sixty days subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears jail-bound.

Imminent Incarceration

The adjudicated instigator – who had been living under residential detention in his estate while a set of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is broadly anticipated to be imprisoned in the near future, amidst increasing talk that he will be sent to a infamous maximum security penitentiary.

Previous Comments on Inmates

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the far-right ex- soldier showed little compassion for Brazil’s prison population.

“What’s the need to provide those dirtbags a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to finish behind bars, you simply need is to avoid rape, kidnap or theft.”

Jail Location Discussion

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week toured the facility in an apparent attempt to dissuade the judiciary from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he expected the 70-year-old figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious gut ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the last election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His health is very grave. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the quality of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells holding 40 prisoners: “It's virtually one meter squared per detainee.

“We spoke to the convicts and they protest, of course, of the terrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the sole person voicing opinions before the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.

Writing in a leading publication, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its past”.

“This is an unfairness that gnaws the souls of countless people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Popular Response

It is possibly accurate given the considerable backing Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of numerous others who think he should be jailed for plotting to prevent the elected leader from assuming office – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the sitting president's allied group, stated: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. No one desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to obtain respectful treatment – but respectful care while incarcerated. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the severe handling of inmates, had suddenly become aware to their entitlements. “Only now has the far-right – which has always argued that civil liberties should not be for offenders – opted to visit a penitentiary to learn what situations are actually like,” he said.

“The former president is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, degrading handling”.

Likely Jail Environment

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely destination appears to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “unique” prisoners called Papudinha (Small Papuda).

His potential cell are far more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive official residence, around 12 miles away.

As per sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – approximately the size of two parking spaces – and contains a 130 square foot restroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a TV and even a small fridge in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” sources stated.

Partisan Responses

Senator Lucas denounced the rumoured proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his future in the {
