A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation struggling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the forty-year-old entertainer was accosted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The motive behind the shooting is unknown and no arrests are in custody, according to authorities.
Police said that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a building in the vicinity of the city center landmark.
He had spent several hours at the building managing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, as per local media.
"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement confirmed.
Surveillance tape showed a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ tried to run away after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.
It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.
Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the crime scene.
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.
"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the attack, and police have been attempting to locate them to find their location," added an official.
His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.
"I am in shock. I am shattered," were her words.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."
She appealed to the public to avoid sharing explicit content from the incident, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's young family.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.
Apart from his media career, Stock was active in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, offering VIP protection services and protecting prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in real estate operations and was involved in property reclaimations.
His murder has shocked the country and led to an wave of remembrances from his fans, the authorities and political parties.
A government minister remarked he was angry and saddened by Stock's murder.
"He spoke his truth boldly and honestly. He even criticized me and my decisions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," he stated.
A party figurehead said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a trauma for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director expressed that "DJ Warras was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an lasting impression."
In a release, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, warmth and quick humor, adding that his memory "will endure".
