The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came this week.
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."
The drama launched in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
