The Mystery Within the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the cavern is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about his research, the briefcase most likely held vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.
